If your Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) application in Idaho has been denied, the reconsideration process is your first step in appealing the decision. Most initial claims are denied, but reconsideration gives you an opportunity to have your application reviewed again without going directly to a hearing.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Step 1: Requesting Reconsideration
  • You must request reconsideration within 60 days of receiving your denial notice.
  • Submit the request in writing, online, by phone, or in person at your local Idaho Social Security office.
  • Make sure to include any new medical evidence or updated work information that supports your claim.

Step 2: What Happens During Reconsideration
  • A new disability examiner at Idaho Disability Determination Services (DDS) will review your case.
  • They evaluate all medical records, work history, and supporting documents.
  • The examiner may request additional medical exams or updated records to make a determination.

Step 3: Timeline for Reconsideration
  • In Idaho, reconsideration decisions typically take 3 to 5 months.
  • You will receive a written notice of the decision explaining whether your claim is approved or denied.

Step 4: Next Steps If Denied Again
  • If your reconsideration is denied, you can request a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ).
  • The ALJ hearing allows you to present evidence in person and may involve expert testimony.
  • If necessary, further appeals can be made to the Appeals Council and ultimately federal court.

Tips to Strengthen Your Reconsideration in Idaho
  • Submit any new or additional medical evidence that was not included in your initial claim.
  • Ensure all doctor statements clearly describe your functional limitations.
  • Stay consistent with your medical treatment and follow prescribed care.
  • Consider consulting an experienced SSDI attorney to guide you through the process.
